The land of QTR Estate was formed during the last 1.6 million years and sits on an un-named and inactive fault. The western portion of the fault is underlain by Pliocene-age sedimentary deposits which are sandy, silty, and made up of volcanic gravel. The eastern portion of our site is made up of older Jurassic and Cretaceous-age sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks of the Francisco Assemblage. At some point in its history, there was a deep bedrock landslide creating debris that is now our top and subsurface soils. This debris is largely composed of disrupted claystone bedrock with cobbles and boulders of volcanic matter up to 24” in diameter.
Our site is located on the lower elevations of Howell Mountain spanning 850 to 1200 feet and benefits from afternoon sun exposure and cool evening breezes. The vineyard is divided into 7 vineyard blocks ranging from one-third to nearly 2 acres in size. In total, just over 6 acres are planted. Four clones of Cabernet Sauvignon and Chappellet Chenin Blanc budwood were selected specifically for its soils. The vineyard is harvested according to these small blocks and vinified separately. When blended, the varying flavors create the complex wines of QTR Estate.
